Star Trek at 60: AI, Imagination, and the Future We’re Already Living
Star Trek yn 60: Deallusrwydd Artiffisial, Dychymyg, a’r Dyfodol Rydym Eisoes yn Ei Fyw
I have been working on a speech coming up this month, which is part English and Welsh.
Inspired by the new series - Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and as a celebration of Gene Roddenberry's original space saga turning 60 this year, I thought it was time to present a new bilingual article.
I am inspired by characters in the new series who referred to a wing of the academy named after a Captain who insisted his crew learn Welsh!
https://nation.cymru/news/welsh-language-gets-unexpected-shout-out-in-tv-spin-off2/
Dismayed at the lack of Welsh representation in the Star Trek universe, I actually asked Lolita Fatjo, who was the production and script co-ordinator of Star Trek: The Next Generation at the Cardiff fan convention Warp Two in 1996, why Wales wasn't represented in The Final Frontier. Bearing in mind, it was a capacity Welsh crowd.
Her answer was diplomatic but inconclusive, pretty much, they will get around to it eventually, and it's a big universe..
Well.. There are no Welsh Captains yet.. at least in 2026 thus far..
Or canny crew members who just can't get the engines to work and need more time, Doctors who insist they are medical professionals and not bricklayers, and inscrutable scientists who are bemused by the lack of Welsh logic.. and please don't go there with Welshy replacing Scotty in that episode of Futurama!
(Although, I get why George Takei's Sulu would remark about his wonderful singing voice).
To boldly go.. I fynd yn eofn… or as I prefer..
Yn eofn tua’r dyfodol.
Introduction / Cyflwyniad
In September, Star Trek turns 60. Six decades since a modest 1966 television series introduced audiences to a future where humanity didn’t just survive — it matured. Gene Roddenberry’s vision was never merely about warp drives or alien diplomacy. It was about possibility: that technology, guided by ethics and curiosity, could elevate civilisation.
As we stand in 2026 — in the midst of a genuine artificial intelligence revolution — Star Trek feels less like fiction and more like a long-running thought experiment that we’re beginning to live inside.
Ym mis Medi, mae Star Trek yn troi’n 60 oed. Chwe degawd ers i gyfres deledu gymharol fach ym 1966 gyflwyno dyfodol lle nad oedd dynoliaeth yn goroesi’n unig — ond yn aeddfedu. Nid oedd gweledigaeth Gene Roddenberry erioed yn ymwneud â gyriannau warp yn unig na diplomyddiaeth estron. Roedd yn ymwneud â phosibilrwydd: y gallai technoleg, wedi’i harwain gan foeseg a chwilfrydedd, godi gwareiddiad.
Wrth inni sefyll yn 2026 — yng nghanol chwyldro gwirioneddol mewn deallusrwydd artiffisial — mae Star Trek yn teimlo’n llai fel ffuglen ac yn fwy fel arbrawf meddwl hir sydd bellach yn dod yn realiti.
A Living Legacy / Etifeddiaeth Fyw
From The Original Series to The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, the Kelvin timeline films, and the modern era — Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Starfleet Academy (2026) — Star Trek has evolved alongside its audience.
Across 13 films and multiple decades, it has consistently asked the same question: not what technology can do, but what humanity should do with it.
O’r gyfres wreiddiol hyd at y gyfres animeiddiedig, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, y ffilmiau Kelvin, a’r oes fodern — Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Prodigy, a Starfleet Academy (2026) — mae Star Trek wedi esblygu ochr yn ochr â’i gynulleidfa.
Dros 13 o ffilmiau a sawl degawd, mae wedi gofyn yr un cwestiwn yn gyson: nid beth all technoleg ei wneud, ond beth ddylai dynoliaeth ei wneud â hi.
Where Star Trek Got AI Right / Lle Cafodd Star Trek AI yn Gywir
Star Trek explored artificial intelligence long before it entered public discourse.
Data from The Next Generation remains one of the most thoughtful portrayals of synthetic intelligence ever created. His struggle for personhood — most notably in The Measure of a Man — anticipated today’s debates around AI rights, autonomy, and accountability.
Voyager’s Emergency Medical Hologram evolved from a tool into a person, mirroring modern AI’s trajectory from narrow systems to adaptive intelligence.
In the modern era, Discovery presented both extremes: Control as an existential AI risk, and Zora as a hopeful vision of emotionally intelligent machines.
Bu Star Trek yn archwilio deallusrwydd artiffisial ymhell cyn iddo ddod yn rhan o drafodaeth gyhoeddus.
Mae Data o The Next Generation yn parhau’n un o’r portreadau mwyaf ystyriol o ddeallusrwydd synthetig erioed. Roedd ei frwydr dros bersonoliaeth — yn enwedig yn The Measure of a Man — yn rhagweld dadleuon heddiw am hawliau AI, ymreolaeth, ac atebolrwydd.
Tyfodd y Doctor holograffig yn Voyager o fod yn offeryn i fod yn unigolyn, gan adlewyrchu taith AI modern o systemau cul i ddeallusrwydd addasol.
Yn y cyfnod modern, dangosodd Discovery y ddau begwn: Control fel risg AI fodolaethol, a Zora fel gweledigaeth obeithiol o beiriannau â deallusrwydd emosiynol.
Trek as a Warning / Rhybuddion Star Trek
Star Trek was never blindly optimistic. It consistently warned us about technological imbalance.
The Borg symbolised the loss of individuality in pursuit of efficiency — a powerful metaphor in the age of algorithms and digital conformity.
Earlier stories like V’Ger and Nomad explored machines that followed logic without empathy — a striking parallel to modern concerns about misaligned AI systems.
Picard revisited synthetic bans and societal backlash, echoing today’s debates around AI regulation and public trust.
Nid oedd Star Trek erioed yn naïf o optimistaidd. Roedd yn rhoi rhybuddion clir am anghydbwysedd technolegol.
Roedd y Borg yn symbol o golli unigoliaeth er mwyn effeithlonrwydd — trosiad pwerus yn oes algorithmau a chydymffurfiaeth ddigidol.
Archwiliodd straeon cynharach fel V’Ger a Nomad beiriannau oedd yn dilyn rhesymeg heb empathi — yn adlais cryf o bryderon modern am AI anghyson.
Ail-ymwelodd Picard â gwaharddiadau synthetig a phanig cymdeithasol, gan adlewyrchu trafodaethau heddiw am reoleiddio AI ac ymddiriedaeth gyhoeddus.
Technology It Quietly Predicted / Technoleg a Ragwelodd
Few franchises have predicted everyday technology with such accuracy.
The communicator became today’s smartphone. The tricorder lives on in portable diagnostics and wearable health tech. The Next Generation PADD foreshadowed the tablet — effectively the iPad decades early.
These weren’t lucky guesses. They were examples of imagination shaping innovation.
Prin yw’r fasnachfraint sydd wedi rhagweld technoleg bob dydd mor gywir.
Daeth y communicator yn ffôn clyfar heddiw. Mae’r tricorder yn byw ymlaen mewn diagnosteg gludadwy a thechnoleg iechyd gwisgadwy. Rhagfynegodd PADD The Next Generation y dabled — i bob pwrpas, iPad ddegawdau’n rhy gynnar.
Nid damweiniau oedd y rhain. Roeddent yn enghreifftiau o ddychymyg yn siapio arloesedd.
The Films and the Big Questions / Y Ffilmiau a’r Cwestiynau Mawr
The films expanded Trek’s AI themes with emotional depth.
The Motion Picture explored machine evolution and meaning. First Contact introduced the Borg to cinema audiences. Nemesis and Picard revisited synthetic identity and legacy.
Across eras, the films reinforced a simple truth: technology amplifies who we already are.
Ehangu wnaeth y ffilmiau themâu AI Star Trek gyda dyfnder emosiynol.
Archwiliodd The Motion Picture esblygiad peiriannau a phwrpas. Daeth First Contact â’r Borg i’r sinema. Ail-edrychodd Nemesis a Picard ar hunaniaeth synthetig ac etifeddiaeth.
Drwy’r cyfnodau, atgyfnerthodd y ffilmiau wirionedd syml: mae technoleg yn chwyddo pwy ydym eisoes.
Why It Still Matters / Pam Mae’n Dal yn Bwysig
Star Trek’s greatest strength isn’t prediction — it’s perspective.
It reminds us that progress without ethics is regression. That intelligence without empathy is dangerous. And that exploration — whether cosmic or computational — must be guided by values.
In an AI-driven era, that message feels more relevant than ever.
Nid rhagfynegi yw cryfder mwyaf Star Trek — ond safbwynt.
Mae’n ein hatgoffa bod cynnydd heb foeseg yn atchweliad. Bod deallusrwydd heb empathi yn beryglus. A bod archwilio — boed yn ofodol neu’n gyfrifiadurol — yn rhaid ei arwain gan werthoedd.
Mewn oes a yrrir gan AI, mae’r neges honno’n fwy perthnasol nag erioed.
Final Thought / Myfyrdod Terfynol
Sixty years on, Star Trek remains one of humanity’s most optimistic mirrors. It challenges us not just to build smarter machines, but to become wiser custodians of them.
The real frontier was never space. It was always us.
Ar ôl 60 mlynedd, mae Star Trek yn parhau’n un o’r drychau mwyaf optimistaidd i ddynoliaeth. Mae’n ein herio nid yn unig i adeiladu peiriannau callach, ond i fod yn stiwardiaid doethach ohonynt.
Nid y gofod oedd y ffin wirioneddol erioed. Ni oedd hi bob amser.
Boldly met..
I had the chance to meet William Shatner a few years ago — and I’m glad to say he absolutely didn’t disappoint. We even had a brief chat about Wales. At the time, he was due to visit Cardiff to introduce a screening of what many still consider the definitive Trek film, The Wrath of Khan, at the Wales Millennium Centre. Unfortunately, it was scheduled right as COVID hit, and we never got the chance to welcome Captain Kirk to Cardiff Bay.
Cefais y cyfle i gwrdd â William Shatner ychydig flynyddoedd yn ôl — ac mae’n rhaid dweud na siomodd o gwbl. Cawsom hyd yn oed sgwrs fer am Gymru. Bryd hynny, roedd i fod i ymweld â Chaerdydd i gyflwyno dangosiad o’r hyn y mae llawer yn ei ystyried yn ffilm Trek orau erioed, The Wrath of Khan, yng Nghanolfan Mileniwm Cymru. Yn anffodus, trefnwyd y digwyddiad ar union adeg i COVID daro, ac ni chawsom y cyfle i groesawu Capten Kirk i Fae Caerdydd.
I hope we can welcome my O Captain! My Captain! to the valley in the not-too-distant future.
In Wales, we may have our own resident Time Lord and the intergalactic security service Torchwood based in Cardiff Bay. More of my thoughts and experiences in that universe at another time and space.. yet..
I am looking forward to a Welsh captain looking out at a view screen into the final frontier..
..Taking our language, culture and.. yes.. Hiraeth.. To the next generation and beyond..
Yn eofn tua’r dyfodol.
